For a long time, the issue of fighter pay in UFC has been at the center of a negative spotlight. This problem was most highlighted when former UFC champion Francis Ngannou relinquished his title and left the company this January. The reason for this departure for purely because the UFC failed to provide Ngannou with the right money and facilities, according to the former champ.

The situation has drawn significant attention, from prominent figures from outside the MMA world, such as Jake Paul. Paul has repeatedly talked about a better pay structure for UFC fighters. Moreover, the YouTuber turned boxer has never missed an opportunity to take jabs at UFC boss Dana White for this issue. Recently, Paul had an unexpected guest, Jorge Masvidal on his podcast. The conversation was filled with entertainment and one of the most interesting topics was fighters’ pay.

Paul made it clear that he thinks the UFC is unlikely to address the issue of fighters’ pay voluntarily. According to him, the current pay structure is a part of the UFC’s business model, and it won’t change unless external pressures force the organization’s hand. This is why, the podcast host revealed his intentions to start a fighters union for UFC fighters.

However, according to Paul, many fighters are hesitant to sign up for this union. Why? Because they fear potential repercussions, such as being blacklisted or blackballed by the UFC.

“He’s not gonna change the fighter pay until he has to. Because like he said it’s a business model at the end of the day. That’s where the fighters union comes in, which we’re still working on behind the scenes. But it’s crazy it’s damn near impossible because fighters don’t want to sign up. They’re scared of getting blacklisted and blackballed by the UFC”, said Paul.

Moreover, Paul appreciated fighters like Francis Ngannou and Nate Diaz, who have left the UFC and found opportunities to earn significantly higher pay elsewhere. “It’s cool that people like Francis or even Nate are leaving the UFC and are now able to go make a lot more money. I guess they create the example for other fighters”.
