Most fans have witnessed multiple instances of UFC fighters stepping inside the boxing ring. It all started with UFC icon, Conor McGregor’s boxing match against the famed undefeated boxer, Floyd Mayweather. But since then a number of UFC stars including Anderson Silva and Nate Diaz have also fought under boxing rules. However, there are several other instances where things went towards the materialization of a boxer vs. UFC fighter bout, but they never happened.

A large chunk of fans might remember the former UFC Welterweight kingpin, Kamaru Usman’s Twitter (now ‘X’) altercation with the Mexican boxing star, Canelo Alvarez who had his last bout against Jermell Charlo on 30 September. It was April 2022, when these two noted stars of the combat sports world fired online shots at each other, making the fans restless. A large chunk of the combat sports fanbase also speculated a bout between the two. But Alvarez’s final tweet blew off any such possibilities.

Most boxing and combat sports fans may know about Alvarez’s prime target of building a legacy like no other in the sport of boxing. However, several fans have often criticized him for fighting much lower-skilled opponents than himself just to build his record. Ali Abdelaziz, the head honcho of the known fighter management organization, ‘Dominance MMA’, also hopped onto this train and put out a deriding tweet accusing Alvarez of the same issues.

He further mentioned Usman in his tweet stating, Now I understand why he doesn’t wanna lose to someone like @USMAN84kg this is chicken style, no risk – no reward.”

It can be said that he succeeded in his attempts as Alvarez retweeted his tweet. But he also added a derogatory caption to it that read, “who the f**k is this?”. He probably wasn’t pretty bothered about Abdelaziz’s words.

But this also had Usman entering the Twitter altercation. He started off with a threatening tweet for Alvarez. He clearly implied that he could easily be the reason behind Alvarez getting “hurt”

Alvarez agreed with Usman on this point but with a stark difference. He implied that his counterpart would get “hurt” due to bad-mouthing him. The Mexican also said, “it will not be me”.

Usman fired back with a superbly confident reply. He expressed his willingness to find out who would actually get hurt if a showdown actually took place between the two.

In his reply, Alvarez picked out a point for which UFC fighters have often entered the boxing ring. He implied that Usman wanted to fight him for the big “payday” that he would get from the bout.

Well, looking at Conor McGregor’s earnings from his coveted fight against Floyd Mayweather bout, it can’t be said that Alvarez is too wrong in his saying. A number of other UFC fighters who stepped inside the boxing ring also agreed it to be their heaviest payday.

Canelo Alvarez’s coach sounded welcoming towards a Kamaru Usman fight

A lot of fans might have taken Alvarez’s last tweet to be the revelation that this bout wasn’t going to happen anytime soon. His coach Eddy Reynoso also appeared in an interview where he echoed his disciple’s thoughts of building a legacy in the sport. He also wanted Alvarez to stay focused on his actual target.

However, his words, “If you know, a fight came up in the UFC, the way that Mayweather fought McGregor, we’re welcome to that”, may have lit a flame of hope in a lot of fans about watching this Usman vs Alvarez fight materialize. But, it’s been more than a year since all of this. Do you think that the stars will align themselves once more to make this bout happen anytime in the future?
