The world of boxing is not just about glory and glamor. Be it fighters who have moved away from the sport or people with inside news – there have always been a few who talked about the dark underbelly of boxing. There have been rumors regarding boxing being dominated by mobs and shot callers. While there is no way to prove this, former boxing champ Bernard Hopkins recently shed some light on this issue when in talks with Joe Rogan.

Rogan is a familiar face to combat sports fans. The BJJ black belt has been associated with the UFC for a very long time in addition to being a globally recognized celebrity. As someone who has an in with the world of combat sports, the UFC commentator seemed to agree with everything that boxing’s former multi-championship title holder Bernard Hopkins had to say about the sport.

Former boxing champ reveals the other side of boxing to Joe Rogan – The ins and outs!

Former boxing champ Bernard Hopkins joined UFC commentator Joe Rogan on his podcast to talk about a number of different topics. While the two were conversing, Hopkins started talking about the world of boxing and how there are two aspects to it – the sport and the business.

Boxing is a great sport. The business – red light district. And any red light district, that I know of, is not a good a good place to be if you’re gonna be preaching at church on Sunday.“, claimed the retired world champion boxer. Rogan seemed to be in agreement with him. “Well, boxing has always been controlled by crime figures, the mob, crooked lawyers…“, he added, before he was quickly cut off by Hopkins.

But that was then… now, it’s a different time and way to do it. Those days with the envelope underneath the table… no! That been stopped. The way it’s being done now, is based on favoritism – who they want in; who they want out.“, explained Hopkins. He then concluded his point by saying, “When it comes to who they can exploit… who they can make more money with and who they can and cannot influence.“. 

Throwback to when Rogan threw shade at the world of combat sports – Another downside?!

Joe Rogan is one of those people who, like it or not, represent the world of martial arts when it comes to the common people. Being a BJJ practitioner himself, Joe Rogan has previously pointed out the downsides to pursuing a career in the world of combat sports.

In episode #1993 of The Joe Rogan Experience, the UFC commentator said, “The problem is, there’s also the downside – people who don’t make, people who get brain damage [and] people who get f*cked up… That’s real.”, talking about a very real problem that a lot of former fighters have had to face. He also said that the path of combat sports is a rocky one with nothing but uncertainty.

Rogan might not be far from the truth as there have been countless scenarios where fighters have been left paralyzed or have undergone severe health issues that changed them forever. Add that to the claims that former boxing champ Hopkins made and you will have an answer as to why people are hesitant when it comes to choosing combat sports as their way of life.
