Jake Paul is gearing up to face Mike Tyson in a professional boxing match on July 20. Fans will see ‘Iron Mike’, 57, return to the ring after almost two decades (except for an exhibition against Roy Jones Jr. in 2020) to take on a 27-year-old Paul.

Tyson has a long and documented history of health issues, including mobility issues which have caused him to even resort to using wheelchairs, on occasion. Paul, on the other hand, is in his athletic prime and three decades younger than Tyson. This disparity in their ages and physical condition has convinced many that Tyson has no chance against Paul. But not Joe Rogan, who commended the celebrity boxer for stepping up and having the guts to face Tyson.

Joe Rogan has reiterated on many occasions that Mike Tyson, who was a huge influence on him growing up, is the greatest heavyweight boxer of all time, and certainly his favorite. And while most have gone after Jake Paul for choosing to fight a retired boxer, who is almost a senior citizen, Rogan actually gave credit to the former Disney star for taking a chance and facing one of the scariest and fiercest fighters in the history of boxing.

“He’s really something special and the fact that he’s willing to fight Tyson even if Tyson’s 57, just the fact that he’s willing to actually take a chance at Mike Tyson not being able to do what he used to do, ‘cuz that’s what he’s doing the gamble is like, there’s not a chance in hell that Jake Paul would survive against the Mike Tyson that beat Marvis Frazier,” he told comedian Sebastian Maniscalco on episode #2149 of his JRE Podcast.

Rogan felt that if Tyson was even remotely close to prime Mike Tyson, who knocked out Marvin Frazier in horrifying fashion in thirty seconds with a vicious uppercut, he would make mince meat of Paul. However, what the former Disney star was counting on was that the age and physical decline of Tyson would be enough for him to prevail over their eight-round contest, according to Rogan.

Some such as multiple black belt and Hollywood star, Michael Jai White thinks that the world-class skills, legendary strength, and superior size of Tyson would be enough for him to get through Paul. And Paul, according to Rogan, is ‘wagering’ on which version of Tyson enters the ring. While nothing could be said for sure about who would win their fight, one thing is for certain: the former heavyweight champion is at great risk of taking serious brain damage.

Mike Tyson at risk of irreversible damage by Paul

Mike Tyson is a natural heavyweight and has fought at boxing’s heaviest division all his career. Jake Paul, on the other hand, is undersized compared to the New Yorker and has fought on or south of 180-pounds so far. Coming off of three wins in the last year alone, and not having suffered any major injuries, the California native seems to be in the best shape of his life.

And if, as many are expecting, his athleticism and stamina proves too much for Tyson as the rounds progress, ‘Iron Mike’ is at great risk of suffering major, potentially unreversible brain damage if he takes too much punishment.

While a younger Tyson would have laughed off any damage sustained during the Paul fight, Tyson’s advanced age is a serious risk factor. With age, the brain’s ability to recover from concussions and from being rattled for long periods of time declines. Which is why many are concerned about Tyson, one being Nathan Howarth, a Director at the Concussion Legacy Foundation UK, having spoken about these potential issues in a recent interview with Betway.

But ‘Iron Mike’ is a champion and one of the greatest to ever do it with fearsome power, which is the last thing to go, as George Foreman proved. Many, including Rogan, will not be surprised if Tyson is able to come out on top despite everything being against him on paper.
