Mike Tyson was one of the most ferocious boxers in the history of the sport. His hard-hitting strikes and punches made him one of the most feared opponents for anyone who stepped up to him. However, what many people don’t know is his ability to take hits. Tyson was also as durable as he was offensive. But Joe Rogan seems to have put a finger on what made Tyson so invincible.

Undisputed welterweight champion Terence Crawford joined the 56-year-old in a recent episode of the million-dollar podcast, ‘The Joe Rogan Experience’. They discussed a range of topics including Mike Tyson’s ability to take hits. Let us take a look at what Rogan and Crawford had to say.

There aren’t many boxers who’ve been able to strike fear into their opponents quite like ‘Iron’. UFC commentator Joe Rogan mentioned that the boxing icon’s punches were not only powerful, but he also had tremendous speed. It made it hard for Tyson’s opponents to defend against such strikes. Rogan said, “The punches come so fast. The thing about Tyson too is speed.”

Terence Crawford then mentioned how the former world champion also had the ability to just eat the punches from his opponents. It did not seem to faze him. Tyson would just wait for the perfect time so that he could land his powerful punch. “Tyson got hit a lot… he is willing to take a hit to get his powerful hit off,” said Crawford. However, Joe Rogan had an explanation for that as well.

UFC commentator cites Tyson’s neck as the biggest trait

It is well-documented that Mike Tyson used to partake in some unusual exercises to grow his neck. ‘Iron’ used to work on his neck for thirty minutes on a daily basis. The workout included performing neck bridges, just to grow his neck up to twenty inches. Joe Rogan cited that physical feature to be one of his biggest advantages. The 56-year-old said, “He also had that neck that starts at the top of his ear.”

He is always left in awe of Tyson’s huge neck. Similarly, the ability to use that neck to absorb strikes and punches is what Joe Rogan thinks makes the boxing icon one of the most unique athletes of all time. “It’s a crazy neck, man. He could take a punch better than anybody. Better than anybody,” said the UFC commentator.
