Showtime has been the home of boxing for over 37 years. However, they will discontinue boxing programming at the end of 2023. Eddie Hearn recently had an interview with ‘TheMacLife’, where he expressed his thoughts on Showtime’s exit. He also gave his take on Dana White and Conor McGregor, calling Showtime president Stephen Espinoza a “weasel.”

Dana White and Stephen Espinoza have never maintained an amicable relationship. They started beefing all the way back in 2017. Furthermore, Espinoza recently took a dig at the UFC, claiming that White’s promotion could never earn as much as they’ve done with ticket sales. However, they may not be able to replicate that since Showtime will leave boxing at the end of this year. Let us take a look at what Eddie Hearn had to say about that.

Matchroom Sport’s chairman Eddie Hearn recently addressed Showtime’s exit from boxing programming. He mentioned his problems with Stephen Espinoza, claiming that he had the chance to take shots at the Showtime president many times in the past. Hearn also noted that he had predicted the end of the Showtime-boxing partnership a couple of years ago.

He stated, “I mean, the problem with [Stephen] Espinoza, and I’ve said, you know, I really had a great opportunity to stick the knife in on Espinoza when Showtime left boxing. I said they would, albeit, two years ago, but I said they would.”

However, Eddie Hearn is very happy about Showtime’s exit. Given the history they’ve had for the last 37 years with boxing programming, the Matchroom Sport chairman mentioned that Espinoza’s TV network had done a lot of good for the sport. “But I’m actually sad that Showtime have left boxing because I think they were great for boxing,” said Hearn. Meanwhile, he also shared his reaction to the instance when Conor McGregor and Dana White described Stephen Espinoza with the same word. Let’s take a look at that front.

Hearn loved it when Conor McGregor and Dana White called Stephen Espinoza a “weasel”

There is no love lost between Eddie Hearn and Stephen Espinoza. The Matchroom Sport chairman mentioned that he never got along with the Showtime president due to his own personal reasons. It had nothing to do with Dana White’s beef with Espinoza. Hearn said, “I have never really got on with Espinoza. I’ve got my reasons for that.”

Dana White and Conor McGregor have both taken shots at Stephen Espinoza. ‘The Notorious’ took shots at the Showtime president back when he was promoting his fight against Floyd Mayweather. It was then that McGregor called Espinoza a “weasel,” which was later echoed by White. Moreover, Eddie Hearn seemed to enjoy that comment and he revealed that the “weasel” dig made him smile. “Yeah, he did [on Conor McGregor calling Espinoza a ‘weasel’]. I love that. That really made me smile,” voiced the Matchroom Sport chairman.

While the “weasel” comment will be one that still remains fresh in the memories of combat sports fans, Showtime Sports will be shut down after almost a four-decade run. Moreover, Stephen Espinoza is reportedly said to be laid off as well. It remains to be seen what lies ahead for the future of boxing since Showtime had a lasting effect on the sport, but soon it will cease to exist.
