The melee between John Gotti III and Floyd Mayweather seized the headlines when both camps jumped into the ring after referee Kenny Bayless called off the fight in the sixth round. The chaos that ensued at the conclusion of the fight will remain fresh in the memories of combat sports fans for a long time. While pundits and stars such as Joe Rogan have weighed in on the controversy, a UFC veteran recalls the flashes of a similar incident that gripped UFC over 4 years back concerning Conor McGregor.

Chael Sonnen drew a parallel with what transpired with ‘The Notorious’ at UFC 229. In a fight against Khabib Nurmagomedov, the Irish fighter found himself on the canvas, tapping out in the fourth round. Afterward, a scuffle followed between the two teams inside the cage when ‘The Eagle’ himself jumped the Octagon to attack Dillon Danis. Also, McGregor suffered a few blows from one of Nurmagomedov’s cornermen. However, Sonnen believes the blame lies with the NSAC.

The wrestler said, “Conor McGregor is a victim of a crime. Multiple crimes happened to Conor McGregor. In front of the world, in the presence of the governor, in the designated area of the commission, the commission failed miserably. And how much liability you want to put on them for an unforeseen act?”

Following this, he stated courtrooms were still deciding those cases. He painted the target at the commission as the jurisdiction lies with NSAC and the commission failed in its job. That resulted in an assault on the 34-year-old global superstar.

McGregor played into the commission’s hands

Sonnen stated, “Every courtroom in this country is deciding those cases right now. Today, somebody is at fault in every situation. That was the commission’s area, that was the commission’s job and the commission failed. And a crime known as assault happened to Conor McGregor.”
