The UFC interim heavyweight champion began training in traditional martial arts when he was just 7 years old but a desire for a more hard-hitting sport led to him finding his way to wrestling, boxing, and later, Muay Thai. Having already spent much of his life grappling under his father’s tutelage, the transition to MMA was the next logical step for Aspinall who had already been regularly competing by the time he turned 18. Aspinall also has a younger brother, Joe, who currently works as a BJJ instructor at the ‘Aspinall BJJ’ school.

He rebounded from his knee injury by finishing Marcin Tybura in 2023 but the biggest fight of his MMA career came due to <a href="https://www.essentiallysports.com/tag/jon-jones/">Jon Jones’s</a> injury before UFC 295. ‘Bones’ suffered a pectoral tendon tear which led to his clash against <a href="https://www.essentiallysports.com/tag/nate-diaz/">Stipe Miocic</a> falling through and the UFC decided to hand Aspinall the chance to secure interim UFC gold against the dangerous Russian knockout artist, Sergei Pavlovich.  With a spectacular first-round finish, Aspinall etched his name in the history books and is now eyeing the chance to possibly unite the belts against ‘Bones’ in the near future!
