The opponent for the grand finale in the career of the former mixed martial artist, Anderson Silva, is finally revealed. ‘Spider’ is set to fight Chael Sonnen in a squared ring bout on the 15th of July. The fight is being promoted as the grand finale of the Brazilian’s career. Without a doubt, the hype around the fight is palpable.

This would be the third time for Sonnen and Silva to land against each other. ‘Spider’ won the last two fights against Sonnen, via finishes. But this time, things might take a different turn. After Sonnen took to his IG account and teased the fight fans, Ariel Helwani took the steps to reveal the details of the fight.

Ariel Helwani recently took to X and tweeted the details of the fight. He disclosed that although it was Silva’s grand finale, the boxing bout would not be the Brazilian’s retirement fight. Furthermore, the famed MMA reporter disclosed that the fight would take place in São Paulo, with about 600 people in the audience. It would be a “black tie event”. The fight will go on for five rounds, two minutes each. The weight category is 216 pounds. Surprisingly, it would not be an exhibition fight, but a “Pro boxing” match instead. Helwani didn’t fail to address Spartan Beer, the man who made this possible, saying, “All put together by Spaten Beer.”

In the video footage attached to Helwani’s tweet, ‘The Bad Guy’ made his appearance as Silva’s opponent. Sonnen said in the video, “Spaten, thank you for this invitation. There is only one person able to face this fighter in his grand finale. Me! Brasil, nos vemos no ringue (Brasil, see you in the ring).” Needless to say, given their history, Sonnen might be the best fighter to go against ‘Spider’ for his grand finale. If you’re wondering what happened in their previous fights, you’re at the right place. Let’s dive right into it.

What happened when ‘Spider’ and ‘The Bad Guy’ previously clashed?

‘Spider’ and ‘The American Gangster’ fought each other in the Octagon at UFC 117 for the first time. Sonnen, although dominated the arena and was leading the scorecards, was taken down in the fifth round. It was when Silva performed a successful triangle choke, submitting Sonnen. The results fell in Silva’s favor as he defended his championship belt. This fight also added up becoming the Brazilian’s 12th consecutive win in the UFC. Furthermore, it was also declared ‘Fight of the Year’ in 2010.

However, the rivals were fated to clash again. UFC 148 marked the ‘Spider’ and ‘The American Gangster’ landing against each other for the second time. As the fight continued, both sides exchanged blows after blows. But in the second round, Silva defeated Sonnen via TKO.  But now, the former mixed martial artists are about to fight once again. Would the squared ring change the results? It’s something that only time can tell.
