Canelo Alvarez's indifference—Is it a sign of UFC's waning influence in combat sports?

Canelo Alvarez is about to throw hands against Edgar Berlanga on September 14 on Mexican Independence Day at the T-Mobile Arena. What’s interesting about this bout is the fact that Alvarez is giving a competition to Dana White’s once-in-a-lifetime UFC Sphere, which is scheduled to happen on the same night. The UFC CEO has already spent millions on the event, and Alvarez’s existence is bad news for the entire card, which will be headlined by Sean O’Malley and Merab Dvalishvili.

Well, during the UFC 304 post-fight press conference, Dana White came forward to make sure that they were not worried about the boxing match. “To be honest, I didn’t know what they were going to do. But it’s Mexican Independence Day, so you have to assume there were probably going to be other Mexicans fighting that night besides ours.” The UFC CEO might have used his charming sarcasm to dodge the question, but Canelo Alvarez is focused on defeating the UFC, and his latest confession is a warning for White and Turki Alalshikh.

A massive $17 million has been spent by the UFC to make the Noche event a once-in-a-lifetime event for every combat sports fan. The UFC CEO, even in one of his statements, highlighted that after them, no promotion will ever do this due to the exorbitantly high cost. When you are the biggest star of the boxing world, then even if you make obnoxious statements, people are going to believe them, and Alvarez’s recent comments about clashing against Dana White as well as Turki Alalshikh on Mexican Independence Day have stunned the entire combat sports world. While having a casual conversation, Alvarez said, “Maybe another boxing match, maybe, but Canelo is different. Canelo is just different. I don’t care if it’s the UFC; when Canelo fights, it’s different.”

Canelo Alvarez's indifference—Is it a sign of UFC's waning influence in combat sports?

Have an interesting take?

Despite Dana White’s calm demeanor, he accused Canelo Alvarez’s manager that they had knowingly highjacked the same date to make sure to cash against the UFC. “Haymon snatched the date from me right away,” said White in one of his statements. Well, betting against White might prove to be bad for Alvarez. Why, you ask? For that, let’s have a closer look at what’s happening between the fighter and the promoter.

Alvarez and Alshikh face off in the boxing world

Canelo Alvarez is arguably the biggest fighter in the boxing world right now. His fights generate a ton of revenue, but is ͏it enough ͏to justify asking for more than ͏$20 million to fund ͏Trevor Crawford? Well, Saudi Arabia’s royal advisor and the current chairman of the General Entertainment Authority, Turki Alalshikh, has made sure in his most recent take that they have no interest in having Alvarez fight as they are prioritizing the US market for now.

Well, Alalshikh’s statement found its way to Alvarez, who stated that Alalshikh’s words don’t concern him: “I don’t really care about it. I’m focused 100% on my fight; I don’t really care about it. They called me yesterday; they texted me yesterday if it was possible to talk about the Crawford fight for February or meet yesterday here in Los Angeles with the team.

Well, going against the top man of the boxing world for now might prove to be drastic for Canelo Alvarez, but if he succeeds in ousting both Dana White and Turki Alalshikh on September 14th, then it would be a huge deal in the combat sports world.
