It is almost time the world finds its next ‘baddest man on the planet’ tag holder. The top two contenders for this infamous title are all minds are – Jon Jones and Tyson Fury. Jones has recently made a triumphant return to UFC, switching to the heavyweight division and becoming the champion. On the other hand, Fury has been dominating his area of boxing like a Lion!
It all started when Joe Rogan sparked the conversation by pondering the outcome of a hypothetical closed-room fight between the two fighters. The comment quickly escalated into a heated exchange. Even UFC President Dana White agreed to make this fight happen. Although the deal is far from being official right now, UFC veteran Chael Sonnen has made some strong comments about how the makers of this fight should go ahead.

Sonnen recently uploaded a video discussing the potential mega-fight. He highlighted the four key elements necessary for a blockbuster match up – the red corner, the blue corner (referring to the two opponents), the promoter, and the audience.
“There are four things and I’m talking about the mega fights. The mega-fight should have four things. A bit of a red corner and a blue corner. In this case, Jones and Tyson, they’re here, they’re at the table. You’re going to convince a promoter, Dana’s here, he’s at the table. He is chomping at the bit. Then you gotta have an audience, we sure as hell do.”
According to the former UFC fighter, all four components are present for a Jones vs Fury showdown. However, he still thinks a massive fight like this one is difficult to put up. Further, Sonnen also believes that it is going to take some critical thinking and retrospective assessments.
“This is a massive piece of business but it’s going to require something outside of the box. It’s going to require you to study other times that a wild match like this was put together and what ingredients did it have. Moreover, you’re gonna learn in reverse. You’re going to see what happens to all the guys that went for these fights and they got laughed away.”
Jon Jones vs Tyson Fury should repeat the mistakes of potential fights such as Conor McGregor vs Manny Pacquiao?
History has shown that such cross-discipline fights between boxers and MMA fighters often fail to materialize. Sonnen cautioned against repeating the mistakes made in previous attempts to organize similar fights. He urged a thorough analysis of previous cases, such as Conor McGregor‘s unsuccessful bid against Manny Pacquiao, Kamaru Usman‘s callout of Canelo Alvarez, and the failed negotiations between Oscar De La Hoya and Georges St-Pierre.

By studying these instances, a solid plan can be crafted to ensure the success of this colossal clash. “You’re not gonna have to go back very far. Go look at McGregor and Pacquiao recently, you can go look at Kamaru Usman’s call out of Canelo recently. You can look at De La Hoya and George St-Pierre recently to find out what did they do what were the commonalities. Because obviously, they were wrong and you’re gonna start to put your plan together.”
