The judges’ decision in the UFC has been criticized a number of times. Similarly, there are people who feel that the scoring system in MMA is not up to the mark. UFC color commentator, Joe Rogan thinks so too.

After witnessing Carla Esparza’s win over Rose Namajunas at UFC 274, the commentator feels there are some changes needed in the scoring system.
As reported by ‘MMA Junkie’, Pat Barry, who was in Namajunas’ corner, encouraged the fighter to follow their game plan against Carla Esparza. However, unbeknownst to him, judge Rick Winter had Esparza winning the first four rounds. Similarly, judge Brad Frank had Esparza winning the first three rounds.
This sealed Carla Esparza’s win over Namajunas via a split decision. However, the scorecards were all over the place and the commentators had no idea who would win the fight.
In a new episode of the JRE with Gina Carano, Rogan discussed the issue with her. He said (h/t MMA Junkie), “I don’t know. I’m a big fan of Pat Barry, I love him, but he was saying something different than the rest of the corner was saying. … I think maybe the game plan was to make Carla frustrated and take big risks?”
“This is my No. 1 problem with scoring, the way we have scoring in MMA: Any one of those rounds (in Esparza vs. Namajunas) could be a 10-9 round, or a round where someone beats someone pretty cleanly and lands a lot of shots could also be a 10-9 round. That doesn’t make any sense. That’s a flaw in the scoring system.”
Joe Rogan explains the ideal scoring system in MMA
“We need a better system. We don’t need boxing’s system. It shouldn’t have anything to do with 10-9.”
Thus, Rogan feels Mike Tyson’s sport, which is boxing, is extremely different from MMA. Hence, MMA needs a different system.

In a conversation with Aljamain Sterling, Rogan had suggested a few changes to the system. However, he was criticized because many felt the commentator unknowingly suggested fixing MMA judging with the criteria that has already been used.
