Is a Tyson vs. Paul fight a mockery of boxing or a genius move for the sport?

The entire fighting community has been speculating the outcome of the slated fight between Jake Paul and Mike Tyson for quite some time now. Needless to say, excitement for the fight is also accompanied by concerns as the former WBC heavyweight world champion battles the problems of old age. Earlier in January 2024, the former champ was spotted riding a wheelchair due to his sciatica, a condition that puts the patients through immense pain, and weakness as any movement puts pressure on the sciatic nerve. On top of that, Tyson had to pull out of the fight in July because of his ulcer flaring up.

But now, the fight is scheduled once again and the boxers are ready to go down on each other on the 15th of November 2024. With a few weeks left to the match, Joe Rogan and his guests pointed at the best-case scenario for the fight.

In episode #163 of the JRE MMA Show, Rogan sat down together with the former mixed martial artists, Din Thomas, John Rallo, and Matt Serra. The four men weighed in on the fight between ‘Iron Mike’ and ‘The Problem Child’. That was when the UFC color commentator expressed his concern for Tyson’s health, after wondering about how the former champion felt now on having to fight Paul.

The Bellator FC legend pointed out that Tyson seemed to have fun while promoting the fights. It was indeed a win-win situation for him. In case he loses the fight, the world will put the blame on his old age. But winning against Paul would simply add to his legacy. Rogan took things forward and said, “He’s a monster. Look, at the end of the day, Mike Tyson is a monster. And if he can get that monster to just move in and close the distance and he uncorks a boom boom on Jake Paul, and watch Jake Paul going to queer street, that will be wild.”

It was Din Thomas’ turn next and he claimed that the best case scenario for the world would be Tyson’s victory via KO. Adding to that, the 57YO podcaster said, “Yeah. Best case scenario is Jake Paul realizes immediately, he’s in there with Mike Tyson. That Mike Tyson, at least for a round or two, first time…” Needless to say, this emotion was shared by the MMA veterans as well.

It is indeed one of the most interesting matchups in the history of professional boxing. But that brings us to the question of how ‘The Baddest Man On The Planet’ would knock his opponent out. Well, Rogan has an answer to that.

JRE host points out how Tyson can knock Paul out

As the conversation continued, Rogan said, “He [Tyson] is perfectly capable [of knocking Paul out]. If he [Pau] zigs when he should have zagged, if Mike can close the distance in a way that he doesn’t expect.” However, the problems were still pretty significant for Tyson. He continued, “And Mike also has layers upon layers of attacks that are in his mind. He’s forgotten more about boxing than Jake Paul has ever remembered.”

But the JRE host wasn’t oblivious to Paul’s fighting prowess. He simply wished for ‘The Problem Child’ not to knock Tyson out. It would indeed be a sad story for Rogan to see the legendary boxer get KOed at the age of 58. And several of Iron Mike’s fans too!
