The fight between Jake Paul and Mike Perry has the entire fighting community on the edge of their seats. With just a couple of hours left for the YouTuber-turned-professional boxer to take on the former UFC contender, the big guns in the combat sports world have revealed their thoughts on the outcome of the boxing bout. Needless to say, Chael Sonnen was also one of them.
‘The Problem Child’ has a fetching career in professional boxing with 9 wins and just one single loss against Tommy Fury. On the other hand, ‘Platinum’ is pretty well-versed in the fighting realm. He was one of the most feared fighters in the UFC, and now, he intimidates his opponents with his bare-knuckles at BKFC. While both the fighters have their own perks, who did ‘The American Gangster’ choose as the winner? Let’s see what he had to say.

One day before the fated battle between Perry and Paul, Sonnen sat down together with Tim Welch on the 147th episode of his talk show, ‘Red Hawk Recap’. Therein, Welch asked ‘The Bad Guy’ to pick a fighter out of Perry and Paul. Without wasting a single moment, Sonnen began recapitulating Paul’s history in the sport. There was a time when getting a call out from ‘The Problem Child’ made a fighter a laughing stock. After all, Paul initially seemed to target only retired and old legends and defeated them with ease. But things have changed now.
In his previous bout, the 27-year-old defeated Nate Diaz, one of the strongest aspects of the MMA world, via unanimous decision. Sonnen commented, “Now, he’s the favorite over Perry, who is the face of an organization. I’m just saying, what an incredible job done by Jake Paul.” And then, the UFC veteran listed out the reasons why Paul would win.
First off, he went back to the time when Paul and Perry sparred against each other. Therein, the BKFC legend was apparently unable to keep up with Paul. Sonnen said, “And if you listen to Perry, he didn’t go in there and whip Paul. He said that Paul was bigger. He said, ‘You know, so, it, it was kind of I’ve gotten bigger over time’ and he goes you know, ‘But one of my concerns is so has he. I don’t know that we’ve closed the gap, but this guy didn’t whip me or anything. I could do fine with him.’” Such comments from Perry seemed to raise doubts in Sonnen’s mind, with Paul staying away from talking about it. Thereafter, the MMA analyst pointed out that boxing and MMA or bare-knuckle fighting were completely different sports.

Have an interesting take?
While Perry excelled in the realm of bare-knuckle fighting, Paul had proven himself multiple times in the boxing ring. This difference could indeed drop the chances of Perry’s victory.
Sonnen continued, “If I have to give you a name with gloves on, I know Perry can go with him. But I don’t know that Perry can beat him. And experience does matter. This is a different sport. You take your gloves off. It’s much like jiu-jitsu. You take the gi off, you got something close. But it’s different. I gotta give the edge to Paul.” Needless to say, given his record in the squared ring, Paul was pretty confident in his abilities.

‘The Problem Child’ is confident of winning against ‘Platinum’
Paul is well aware of the differences between bare-knuckle fighting and boxing. Just like Sonnen and many others believed, Paul also thought that with his skills and experience in the professional boxing realm, he could easily defeat Perry.
The former social media influencer said, “First of all, he’s big up in the BKFC. But you’re gonna see what I do to their best fighter on Saturday night. I’m gonna embarrass their whole entire thing. This guy has no skill. Those are just brawler idiots who have no idea what the sweet science is.”
