Francis Ngannou is used to taking on almost impossible odds and prevailing in the face of it. The heavyweight started his working career as a teen in the salt mines of Africa. He then crossed a continent and a sea and moved to a foreign country almost penniless to pursue his dream of becoming a fighter. He had no prior fighting experience before he reached France and started training.

A few years later, he was fighting in the UFC and eventually went on to win the heavyweight title before leaving the promotion. And now, he has his eyes set on fighting the heavyweight boxing champion to determine who is the ‘Baddest Man on the Planet’. And, as usual, he has many doubters who feel he will not perform well in the fight, including superstar boxing promoter Eddie Hearn, who compared the bout to the McGregor – Mayweather clash.

Eddie Hearn thinks Francis Ngannou should have taken easier opponents before facing Fury

Hearn was of the opinion that Francis Ngannou should take a few easier fights in boxing before taking on the champion. He even advised Nate Diaz‘s manager to do the same before his fight with Jake Paul earlier this month.

“I actually thought maybe he should take a couple of easier fights and build his credibility to that mega-fight. But he made it quite clear he just wanted to straight into the big fight… I said this to Nate Diaz’s manager as well. But the problem is, they’re not very good. And if you do that and get exposed as having no chance, so the mystery of, ‘Can he? Can he punch hard?’ [is gone],” Hearn told Ariel Helwani.

However, the promoter feels that the reason Ngannou and Diaz did not do that was because they were scared of being exposed as not good enough boxers. He gave Ngannou “no chance” of beating ‘The Gypsy King’ despite the Cameroonian’s legendary power.

Hearn thinks Ngannou – Fury will not be as competitive as McGregor – Mayweather

Conor McGregor fought boxing maestro Floyd Mayweather in a boxing match in 2017. The Irishman reportedly made $130 million from the fight. The massive purses are one of the main reasons that MMA fighters, including Ngannou, want to box. Hearn felt that McGregor-Mayweather was more competitive than the upcoming heavyweight clash as Francis was not a boxer.

“When you actually see the fight, you’re going to realize very quickly as we did with Floyd and Conor, they can’t win. And that was a lot more competitive… Yes, one-punch knockout power and stuff like that, but it’s boxing vs. MMA,” he said.

Ngannou left the UFC over differences in fighter pay, medical insurance, and in-cage sponsorships and, also to be able to box Fury. He eventually got a better deal at the PFL despite people doubting him. And, he has another chance to silence his critics if he can have a good showing, or perhaps even win, against Fury on October 28.
