It has been five years since the Bare Knuckle Fighting Championship (BKFC) was established. It has now risen to prominence as one of the most-watched fight promotions today. However, Joe Rogan pointed out one aspect of the sport that he believes makes no sense at all. He conversed about it with Mike Perry on the recent ‘JRE MMA Show’.
The BKFC is the first promotion to hold legal and regulated bare-knuckle fights in the United States since 1889. It has created many stars, and additionally, many former UFC fighters also switched promotions to get a taste of what the sport has to offer.

MMA, boxing, and many other combat sports make it compulsory for fighters to wear gloves. It not only helps the fighters from hurting their hands but also from receiving dangerous injuries. However, that isn’t the case with BKFC. Joe Rogan was baffled that bare-knuckle fighters do not use gloves. He said, “It’s kinda crazy that the one thing that’s padded [the hands]… you’re kinda padding it because it’s vulnerable.”
Furthermore, the 55-year-old went on to question Mike Perry about the reasons behind BKFC fighters not wearing gloves. Instead, they just encase their hands, leaving the knuckles exposed. Rogan added, “It [the gloves] definitely protects the fighter, and it’s definitely safer for the fighter. But is it realistic? Why is this one thing encased? Why are your hands encased?”
Joe Rogan believes that the primitive and unsophisticated way of hitting someone with the hands exposed is something that doesn’t make sense to him. However, he understands the fact that it is the actual way of fighting. “It seems barbaric to be able to hit someone with bare-knuckle, but that’s the real thing,” said the 55-year-old on his million-dollar podcast.
What are the rules in BKFC?
BKFC allows fighters to wrap and tape their wrist, thumb, and mid-hand, but no gauze or tape can be placed within one inch of these areas. Only closed-fist punches are permitted. Referees stop fights if fighters fall down and don’t get back up within 10 seconds.

Rounds last 2 minutes each, and bouts last five rounds. Boxing trunks, boxing or wrestling shoes, a groin protector with a cup, and a mouthpiece are all part of the attire. The fight takes place in a circular ring, often referred to as the squared circle.

Boxing with bare knuckles originated in England in the 18th century, with James Figg emerging as the first champion. BKFC is the most recent promotion that has revived the sport. As of 2018, Wyoming became the first state to legalize these fights under federal and state laws.
