At UFC 289, Charles Oliveira is all set to make his much-awaited Octagon return. This will be the Brazilian’s first MMA bout, ever since he lost his belt to Islam Makhachev at UFC 280. After this, his Dagestani opponent would go on to defend his belt in a close encounter with Featherweight King Alexander Volkanovski. This super fight was something that the former Lightweight champion himself was expected to be a part of until his last loss.

Nevertheless, ‘Do Bronx’ thinks it’s still possible for him to go up against his Kiwi rival shortly. He expressed this desire during his latest interview with Fox Sports, where the Brazilian was invited to talk about his upcoming bout. According to Oliveira, if he manages to capture the lightweight strap again, then a super fight with Alexander Volkanovski would definitively be on the table. This came in as a response to Niko Pajarillo’s question, asking his opinion on the matter. It is noteworthy that Charles himself was once a part of the UFC’s featherweight division. “We’re here to fight the best in the world. Who knows, who knows if I become a champion again in my division? He is a champion of his division, and we, uh, we can set things up and we can fight each other, um, for the belts.”

This statement shows the Brazilian’s confidence in regaining his belt. Considering his ex-champion status and Beneil Dariush’s win streak, many in the MMA community are expecting this fight to be a title eliminator, with the winner being next in line to face Islam Makhachev for the lightweight strap.

Charles Oliveira does not think the BMF belt winner will fight for the title next

Apart from the upcoming bout between Charles Oliveira and Beneil Dariush, the lightweight division will soon host the return of the BMF strap. The second fight involved the infamous title will see Justin Gaethje and Dustin Poirier locking horns in the main event of UFC 291. Both ‘Highlight’ and ‘Diamond’ are among some of the best strikers in the game today, coming off with wins in their last UFC matches.

But regardless, if Charles Oliveira is to be believed, the winner of the BMF strap won’t be fighting for the UFC lightweight title ahead of him. This comes after Islam Makhachev’s coach, Javier Mendez expressed his concerns about the UFC placing the BMF title win over the Brazilian in line for the Lightweight title. Addressing the matter, the Brazilian dismissed this idea during his appearance on the media day of UFC 289.
