Islam Makhachev will face Charles Oliveira at UFC 294. And, surprisingly, a majority of fans are picking Oliveira to win the fight despite the lackluster performance that the Sao Paulo native put forth in their last bout at UFC 280.

Makhachev was able to control the fight on the ground for the majority of the first round. And in the second round, after Oliveira dealt with some good striking from the Dagestani, the latter caught him with a good shot, downing him, and submitting him soon after. As they gear up to run their first back, the Dagestani and Oliveira have engaged in some back and forth.

Makhachev took to Twitter and wrote that he had wanted to rematch Oliveira earlier in the year in the United States. However, he was told by the UFC and Dana White that they would fight in the UAE at the end of the year at UFC 294. He ended by saying “Everything you say makes no sense”.

“Charles, I asked to fight in US in the summer, but UFC has other plans, I am a UFC fighter like you, never set the conditions for the UFC and fought where they offered, my last fight took place in Australia at the challenger’s backyrd, simple, everything you say makes no sense,” he tweeted.

Although Makhachev did not tag or name anyone in the tweet, it is clearly a response to the former lightweight champion’s statement on the topic.

In an interview with journalist James Lynch, Oliveira had spoken about fighting the lightweight champion in Abu Dhabi. The former considers the city Makhachev’s ‘home’. He told the journalist that while he did not think it was fair, he had acquiesced as Makhachev was the champion.

“[I] don’t necessarily think it’s fair, but it’s the game. You know, that’s where the champion is. He calls the shots, but I’m coming back for my belt,” Oliveira said. Clearly, Makhachev is not happy with the narrative being painted around the fight.
