Finishes seem to be the norm of UFC Fight Night: Covington vs Woodley at the UFC Apex. The preliminary card saw six finishes and fans witnessed a second finish on the main card in the light heavyweight fight between Ryan Spann and Johnny Walker. Pre-fight expectations were big on this fight, given the fighters’ largely offensive styles and professional records.

The fight did not disappoint as ‘Superman’ Spann attempted a takedown quickly and had Walker on the defensive early. He kept him pinned to the fence in a clinch, but the fighters spent the next minute reversing the clinch. The tactic saw both fighters nullify the others’ free swings by staying in close range.

The Brazilian fighter attempted a head kick in the second minute, but Spann thwarted the attempt to send him to the ground. He pounded Walker from the mount as the 28-year-old KO artist desperately attempted to force Spann’s head away.

Johnny Walker snaps a two-fight losing run in dominant fashion

The intensity picked up as Walker hit the ground yet again. He sprung back up quickly as ‘Superman’ swiftly moved in for the kill. Walker blocked the takedown yet again and pounded away at the side of Spann’s head for about ten seconds with strikes that echoed across the UFC Apex.

Spann offered temporary resistance, but Walker got back into attack mode with multiple elbows to the side of the head. The unanswered strikes and punishment led to the referee to call off the bout at 2:42 in the opening round.

Following the fight, he sat down in the middle of the octagon and meditated.

With his win, Jonny Walker snapped a two-fight losing streak and secured the fifteenth finish of his professional career. Furthermore, as a result of his efforts in the 25-foot octagon, the Brazilian fighter ended ‘Superman’ Spann’s eight-fight win streak.
