The chief police officer in charge of the investigation pertaining to the accident stated that speed was definitely one of the causes of the accident.
An investigation into the possibility of DUI (Driving under the influence of alcohol/drugs) is also underway. This is the standard protocol for all accident cases. Experts assess the quantity of alcohol or other intoxicants as soon as a patient coming off an accident is admitted.
While investigating the possibility of DUI is a regular procedure, this is not the first time BJ Penn is being investigated for something.
BJ Penn Has a Knack of Being in the News for the Wrong Reasons
BJ Penn last stepped into the Octagon on 12 May 2019 at UFC 237. He lost his seventh consecutive fight as Clay emerged victorious by unanimous decision.
The UFC then booked him for a fight with Nik Lentz but little did they know what Penn was capable of.
A video showing Penn involved in a fight on the street with a stranger hit the internet much before the fight could take place. That was when BJ Penn was released from the UFC.
Yet, this is not the only reason why Penn’s name seems to be marred with controversy. Once a legendary fighter, his deeds outside the octagon stripped him of any credible reputation that he previously enjoyed.
In 2019, Penn’s partner issued a restraining order against him owing to physical and sexual abuse.

There are various fights in which Penn was involved and got knocked out. And not all of them held in the confines of the Octagon. Yes, a video that shows Penn being knocked out by a stranger in a bar surfaced the internet around a year back. Ironically, fighting outside of the UFC is also what got him kicked out of the UFC.
One really begins to wonder why someone would give the limelight in the Octagon for petty streetfights. And that too, only to get knocked out by random strangers instead of fighters. Whatever happened to sharing the Octagon and fighting with honor against legends like George St-Pierre?
Well, that’s the path BJ Penn chose for himself. We wish the once-legendary-for-the-right-things fighter a speedy recovery. Hopefully, upon recovery, Penn will have a better outlook towards life.
