The combat world is gearing up for yet another highly publicized showdown. YouTube sensation turned WWE superstar Logan Paul is all set to face Conor McGregor’s teammate and friend Dillon Danis. The two are set to go against each other in a boxing match on October 14th. ‘The PRIME Card’ fight under the banner of Misfits Boxing will see the long-standing feud between the two reach a conclusion. However, in the moments leading up to the event, has Dillon Danis gone too far?

The fight is of interest to MMA as well as boxing fans as this marks another title in the chapter of crossover boxing. These moves are supposedly motivated by money and visibility but might even be due to an underlying desire to dominate another sport. In this case, the rivalry has been brewing for a while with Dillon Danis threatening to KO the Paul Brothers on social media. The press conferences have been heated, naturally. But what’s taking center stage is ‘El Jefe’s out-of-pocket behavior on X (formerly Twitter). Criticizing his actions, a UFC star recently spoke out in an interview with ‘InsideFighting’.

Dillon Danis has “attacked” Logan Paul ahead of their fight. However, his verbal onslaught has come under fire for going too far. The recipient of Danis’ heat isn’t Logan Paul, however. It’s Logan’s fiancée, Nina Agdal. In a recent series of posts, Dillon has taken to name-calling, to uploading pictures of Nina online, in attempts to rile him up. Some of these posts are derogatory in nature and are quite explicit as well. Marlon “Chito” Vera said, “Yeah, I mean bro like, once you go that far, when you cross that line and you know you’re going after kids, wives, fiances, f**king girlfriends. That’s a game people shouldn’t be playing. People can get shots for acting like that. Like let’s be honest, you don’t just call and just go, your wife is a w**re. And you post videos and photos of them? People get run over, dude”.

‘Chito’ elaborated, “That’s too far, dude. I’ll f**king throw a brick to your head if that was with me”. ‘Chito’ seemed distressed with the turn of events and criticized the publicity stunt. He also clarified that this sort of disrespect wouldn’t be taken very likely if it were aimed at him. Agreeing with the interviewers that ‘El Jefe’ had indeed crossed a line with ‘The Maverick’, he elaborated. ‘Chito’ said, “Yeah, bro. I mean that’s that’s a swing with a baseball bat to the back of the head”.

Taking it too far: On rhetoric and hype

A large number of MMA fighters have crossed over into boxing for huge PPV events that pay money in lump sums. A significant population of these viewers stems from the fan bases of media figures such as Logan Paul who partake in these events. In a sport of this nature, verbal jousting is an integral part of the narrative. However, good sportsmanship is a facet that needs to be observed always according to the fighting community.

Generating hype before a fight is a crucial part of selling it. The rhetoric that precedes a fight often sets apart a good fight from a great one. But judging from ‘Chito’s responses, it is quite evident that even veterans who know how the game is played cannot condone Danis’ actions. ‘The Maverick’ has sent ‘El Jefe’ a cease and desist letter. But until the score is settled on October 14th, fans can expect more heated exchanges between the two. Who do you think will emerge victorious? Logan Paul or Dillon Danis?
