Khabib Nurmagomedov keeps collecting titles, even in retirement, as cousin Usman Nurmagomedov defeated Patricky Freire for the Bellator lightweight title. The fight went down at Bellator 288 in the Wintrust Arena in Chicago. With his win, the 24-year-old from Dagestan extended his winning streak to 16-0.

This was Nurmagomedov’s first five-round fight. However, the youngster cruised through the rounds in a dominant fashion. The final scorecards read 50-45, 50-44, and 50-44 in the new champion’s favor.

Pros and fans react to Usman Nurmagomedov dominating at Bellator 288

Usman Nurmagomedov upheld the Dagestani mantle at Bellator 288. He maintained the threat of the takedown to keep Patricky Pitbull at bay. Nurmagomedov faced little to no resistance from the former champion as he took him down with ease and delivered vicious ground and pound.

Former UFC heavyweight champion and AKA stalwart Daniel Cormier reacted to the fight by saying:

Cormier also gave his thoughts on Usman Nurmagomedov’s performance during the fight. He mentioned how the young Dagestani was outclassing the more experienced champion.

Elated with his cousin’s victory, ‘Coach Khabib‘ face-timed Usman Nurmagomedov during his post-fight interview.

Reacting to his cousin’s latest win, ‘The Eagle’ also shared an old picture of the two of them to congratulate the new champion.

 

In the caption, Nurmagomedov wrote, “You deserve it Brother 👊 🏆 Another victory, another history.” With this win, Khabib Nurmagomedov has now coached two athletes in two promotions into title fight victories.

Khabib Nurmagomedov is making a name as a coach

Khabib ‘The Eagle’ Nurmagomedov dominated the UFC lightweight division until his retirement. The grappling phenomenon retired after amassing a masterful 29-0 win streak. However, Nurmagomedov entered the MMA world again as a coach and is still collecting wins.

In October 2022, Nurmagomedov’s teammate Islam Makhachev won the lightweight title at UFC 280 in Abu Dhabi. Makhachev made quick work of former champion Charles Oliveira and submitted him inside two rounds. Nurmagomedov is keeping his ‘father’s plan’ alive and well on track with these victories for his team.

Now he has conquered the Bellator lightweight division too with Usman Nurmagomedov. The former lightweight champion is now reigning supreme as a coach in his weight class across two promotions. If ‘The Eagle’ and his team can keep up this momentum, Dagestan is going to reign supreme in the lightweight division for a long time.
