Justin Gaethje is in the same spot where Dustin Poirier was almost a year ago. This weekend, Gaethje will attempt to do what Poirier couldn’t – defeat Khabib Nurmagomedov for the undisputed title. In the lead up to the fight, Poirier and Gaethje have exchanged a few words of their own.
Dustin Poirier won the interim title last April by defeating Max Holloway. However, he came short against Khabib at UFC 242.
The current interim champ, Justin Gaethje, believes Dustin Poirier didn’t have the same motivation left after he held the interim title. In an interview with BT Sport, Gaethje was critical of his former rival for not having the same fire in his belly after becoming the interim champ.

After watching the interview, Poirier replied to Gaethje. He made it to a point to remind ‘The Highlight’ that he had already defeated him when they met inside the octagon.
Because I had worked so hard to put myself in that position..

Justin Gaethje instantly fires back at Dustin Poirier
Justin Gaethje will fight Khabib Nurmagomedov this weekend at UFC 254. He has put in all the work that he feels should go into defeating someone as dominant as the undefeated Russian.
While excitement would be present as a fighter approaches fight week, Gaethje is still finding time to address his fellow lightweights.
Poirier tried to bring up the fact that it was he who came on top when he fought Justin Gaethje. That makes him one of the two fighters, the other being Eddie Alvarez, who has defeated Gaethje. Regardless of the defeat, the interim champion didn’t hold back his thoughts against ‘The Diamond’.

Don’t be mad at me because you made the mistake of thinking you made it. Remember when I was outside taking pics right after the fight and you were hopping around in a hospital?

While Justin will fight for the title, Poirier has set himself a fight against Conor McGregor, which may happen in January. The two fighters have agreed to the fight verbally. However, the UFC is yet to send out contracts to the two.
