Conor McGregor takes every opportunity to mentally own his opponent in the lead up to the match. Surprisingly, it has been one of the biggest selling points of McGregor’s rise as a global superstar. While he is an incredible athlete inside the octagon and has a knack for throwing his left hand for victory, McGregor’s initial win comes from his activities outside the octagon.
It’s similar to what Nick Diaz has repeatedly shown inside the octagon through his trash-talking. It sells tickets and gathers attention. Following the same trend of selling wolf ticket, as Nick would call it, McGregor has come out with a rather funny one-liner for his scheduled bout against Cerrone.

Conor used the cowboy emoji in reference to Donald Cerrone. However funny the caption of McGregor’s recent post on Instagram may be, it also signals towards McGregor’s strategy, in the next game. Conor is a counter puncher, who creates distance and goes for the left counterpunch. Starting from his win against Jose Aldo, to his incredible performance against Eddie Alvarez, Conor has relied on countering his opponents after evading their punches.
McGregor might be referring to his strategy about trying to keep distance and look for the gap, to connect his lethal left hand. He will look to prove a point by knocking down Cerrone in the welterweight division. Many MMA fans have questioned McGregor’s strength with the weight difference in question. However, it will be interesting to see how it plays out when the fight finally happens on Jan. 18 at UFC 246.

Donald Cerrone will have a considerable advantage going into the fight. He has more experience in the welterweight division and has looked impressive in his last few welterweight matches. Conor’s long absence from the octagon is also going to play a vital role in the outcome of the match. It’s an interesting match-up between a brilliant submission artist and a lethal kickboxer against an incredible boxer with one punch knockout power.
McGregor vs. Cerrone takes place inside T-Mobile Arena, Las Vegas, at UFC 246. Both the fighters will make their welterweight return in the main event of the PPV.
