Eddie Alvarez was coming to the fight with a game plan similar to the one adopted by Justin Gathje. And it was obvious since Alvarez started throwing leg kicks and working on Dustin’s body early in the round one. However, Dustin Poirier used his long reach to hurt Alavarez with strikes. the first round was a pretty even round with positives for both the fighters.
In the second round Alvarez tried to take Poirier down since he had a lot of success in the first match in taking Dustin down. However Alvarez found himself in a guillotine while attempting for the take down. But Alvarez was experienced enough to get out of the submission and found himself in a good position. Alvarez implemented ground and pound and tried to submit Poirier. but Poirier persevered and survived.
In the final moments of round 2, Poirier connected a knee to Alvarez’s body and then hurt him more with some vicious punches. Tt was a combination of punches and knees from Poirierthat brought down Alvarez to the ground.
