Novak Djokovic caused a storm in the tennis world when he confirmed that he has tested positive for the novel coronavirus. By now, he’s the most prominent sporting figure to get infected considering he’s the world number one in tennis.
Why the situation becomes even more grave is because of the manner in which he contracted the disease. Novak had organized a tennis tour amidst a raging pandemic which included top tennis stars like Alexander Zverev, Dominic Thiem, Grigor Dimitrov, and Borna Coric. Even though he claimed that the tournament was following safety procedures, emerging pictures clearly showed a complete disregard of social distancing.

In fact, Novak and his peers were shaking hands and hugging without being afraid. After Dimitrov and Coric tested positive for COVID-19, Novak Djokovic and his wife Jelena have also tested positive. This puts up a huge question on any further tournaments.
As was obvious, Twitter wasn’t very kind to the Serbian legend. People who were criticizing in hushed voices came openly in revolt against the President of the ATP Players Council. However, at the same time, appeals were also made for sensitivity as we should not be forgetting that the upcoming days will be hard for Novak and his family.

Prayers up to all the players that have contracted Covid – 19. Don’t @ me for anything I’ve done that has been ‘irresponsible’ or classified as ‘stupidity’ – this takes the cake. https://t.co/lVligELgID

As much of a mess the Adria Tour and its players found themselves in now, it’ll be a very useful wake up call and warning for everybody involved in tennis. Main thing being to see everyone who has tested positive with or without symptoms ending soon free of this damn virus.

The huge amount of backlash is understandable. People obviously expected a player of the status of Novak Djokovic to be more responsible. However, it must be understood that Novak has reiterated multiple times that he is sorry for his actions.
As of now, all he requires is our good wishes for him to heal really quickly.
