Day 7 of the first Grand Slam of the year, Australian Open, had several of the marquee clashes. After the exit of several top players in the previous rounds, we didn’t see any upsets today.
The day started with the Russian beauty, Maria Sharapova, taking on the talented Swiss Belinda Bencic at the Rod Laver Arena. Sharapova blasted 21 aces to beat Bencic 7-5, 7-5. After her match, the world no 1 Serena Williams romped to another easy straight sets victory over Russian Margarita Gasparyan , to set up a blockbuster quarter final clash with another Russian, Maria Sharapova. A spirited performance by the fourth seed Agnieszka Radwanska saw her proceed into the quarter finals at the expense of Anna-Lena Friedsam in three hard fought sets.
An error-prone Djokovic avoided a major upset after he overcame a defiant Gilles Simon in the fourth round of Australian Open after beating him 6-3 6-7 (1-7) 6-4 4-6 6-3 in four hours and 32 minutes at the Rod Laver Arena. Djokovic will play Japan’s Kei Nishikori for a place in the semis, who defeated France’s Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in straight sets. Meanwhile, later in the evening, second seed Roger Federer remained on course to meet Djokovic in the finals after a comfortable 6-2 6-1 6-4 win over David Goffin.
