Andrea Lee's resilience at the Solheim Cup—Is she the unsung hero Team USA needs right now?

In a scintillating display of golf, both Team Europe and Team USA started the Solheim Cup with a bang. Andrea Lee played alongside Rose Zhang against Linn Grant and Charley Hull. Lee played some great shots and made an eagle on the 18th. However, earlier in the day, she was seen receiving treatment from the team physio.

When asked by reporters, she said, “Yeah, obviously health is number one. My body is the most important tool. Just got to take care of it. Just going to get a lot of rest tonight and come back charging up for tomorrow.”

Although, she has had no major injuries in her career, Lee has struggled to find form this season. Last year she powered through a loss of form to make the Solheim Cup squad. This year has been better with two more top 10 finishes than last year, but no wins. Her best performances came in the US Women’s Open where she finished T3 and the T5 in the FIR Hills SERI PAK Championship.

In the Friday Fourball, she won her team 5 points to Charley Hull and Linn Grant’s 4 to win the match. Making a birdie and eagle on her last two holes and almost making an albatross in the process, but it ended in a lip out. Her incredibly good touch on the course would mean an injury will be a great loss for Team USA in the next two days of the Solheim Cup.

Charley Hull lost her second match of the day. Her first match was taken over by a masterclass from Nelly Korda, who proved exactly why she is World No. 1. Although the European pair started their match with Lee and Zhang well, they subsequently lost several holes to the Americans who took the advantage.

Andrea Lee’s partner, Rose Zhang, also made some great putts, earning a good score and helping the both of them finish 5 and 4 over their opponents. On the day, Team USA finished with 6 points while Team Europe earned 2.

A different result to the last Solheim Cup

Andrea Lee and Rose Zhang were paired up for the second time in the Solheim Cup. In 2023, they played together in the second session of the four-ball matches on Saturday in Spain. They played against Madelene Sagstrom and Emily Pederson and lost by two holes. In that match, it was the Americans who started well. They then quickly lost it only to not gain it again in the match despite a great performance, where Zhang birdied hole 9. But Pederson birdied her ball as well and kept the Europeans ahead.

This time, the pairing worked well together. In the first few holes, Lee got off to a slow start, but Zhang played better. After trailing through hole 3, they picked up the lead through the 5. They also won holes 9-12 and ended on a pair of eagles on the 14.

On Saturday, Lee will be sitting out the morning session but may be called up in the afternoon.
