Top trainer Dominic Ingle sat down with Joe Leigh and discussed Billy Joe Saunders’ upcoming fight and how he will have to use an approach similar to the one Tyson Fury used.
In a recent conversation with Leigh, Dominic Ingle discussed a lot of things. He said Saunders is probably the only man who can give Canelo Alvarez a run for his money. But it will take the best version of Billy Joe Saunders to accomplish the task.
Billy Joe Saunders was scheduled to fight Canelo in May. However, with the pandemic looming over and everyone’s safety at stake, that fight was called off.

In late July, Billy Joe Saunders rejected to reschedule the fight in September. He said he wasn’t sufficiently prepared to take the fight and also blamed Canelo’s camp for playing mind games. Amid all this, he even faced a suspension because of a video that he posted.

Speaking about the training, Dominic Ingle said it’ll take time to get Saunders to the desired level. He wants Saunders to compete against low-profile opponents till then. This is similar to Tyson Fury’s approach before fighting Deontay Wilder for the first time. “The Gypsy King” had two warmup fights before his battle with “The Bronze Bomber.”

“Like I said, Tyson Fury, being the example. You look at his fights before boxing Deontay Wilder the first time. You would never have thought he was going to put in that performance that he did,” Ingle said. “They weren’t great fights, but he was just practicing with all those guys. And he turned up on the night [against Wilder].

“That’s what Billy tends to do, turn up on that night. So that’ll be interesting if he could pull that off!”
Ingle wants Billy Joe Saunders to work his way up to a big fight like Canelo. When it’s a fight this big, a match that could define a fighter’s career, you need to be sure you’re at you 100% and even more if possible.
