Tony Ferguson is arguably the unluckiest fighter in UFC history. He has won 12 fights in a row and an interim championship. However, he never got a shot at the undisputed UFC title.
The Boogeyman of the UFC lightweight division, Ferguson has dominated any fighter UFC has put in front of him. He has some impressive wins against Rafael Dos Anjos, Anthony Pettis, Kevin Lee, and Donald Cerrone. Ferguson has won the fans over to the point that him fighting for the title is the most anticipated fight in the lightweight division.
Even Dustin Poirier and Khabib Nurmagomedov have said that no matter who wins in UFC 242, Tony Ferguson is the next in line for a title shot. Not only that, UFC president has claimed many times that Ferguson is getting the title shot next. It’s undeniable that there is no one more deserving for a title shot than Tony Ferguson.
However, when you talk about big fights in UFC Conor McGregor is the first name that comes to the table. McGregor is the most influential combat athlete on the planet, and he deserves the spotlight whenever he fights. So there have been speculations that McGregor might sideline Ferguson and fight the winner of Poirier vs Nurmagomedov next.
McGregor last fought Nurmagomedov in October 2018 and Khabib dominated him in that fight. That apart, McGregor has not been active at all for the last three years. Hence it’s pretty difficult to argue for a title shot for Conor. Yet, many MMA pundits believe that Conor is next in line for the title shot even if Ferguson deserves it.

When asked about whether he is concerned of McGregor jumping the line and fighting for the title next, Ferguson shrugs off any possibilities of that and claimed:
“The fans wouldn’t have it. They put up too much of a fight. It seems he has several fights. The old man recently, he was trying to fight Mark Wahlberg. Maybe That’s the fight for him.”

Recently Conor McGregor gave an interview on ESPN and called out many fighters for his UFC comeback. Tony Ferguson was one of them. However, Ferguson doesn’t seem to buy McGregor’s act of calling out fighters anymore as he showed no interest in a fight with Conor at the moment. He said:
“I don’t know if he wants to fight anymore. he is not my concern. He is like a female like one of those ex-girlfriends. I stopped worrying about that dude.
First, he was in line trying to go for the title. And then once he became irrelevant, I stopped worrying about that dude. And now he is mentioning my name. Get the f*** out of here dude.”

“I see Conor fighting loser of the next fight this weekend” said Ferguson. He also mentioned that he may grant Conor a title shot in the future.
For a title fight, McGregor needs to get a win under his belt for sure. The winner of Donald Cerrone vs Justin Gathje makes sense for Conor at the moment. Or he may face the runner up from UFC 242 since it will be a rematch irrespective of whom he faces from Nurmagomedov vs Poirier.
However, at the moment It’s hard to imagine a scenario in which Ferguson doesn’t fight the winner of the main event in UFC 242.
