Spanish tennis player Carla Suarez Navarro bowed out of the Tokyo Olympics 2020 in heartbreaking fashion earlier today. Despite she and her doubles partner Garbine Muguruza had a match point in the final moments of the game, they lost their second round match to the Swiss pair of Viktorija Golubic and Belinda Bencic.
While fielding questions from the media after the match, the 32-year-old couldn’t hold back tears, just like her younger teammate.

Carla Suarez Navarro and Garbine Muguruza reduced to tears after losing to Switzerland
The Spanish pair started the match in convincing fashion, taking the first set 6-3. However, they lost the second set 6-1 which forced them into a tiebreaker. With both pairs trading the lead back and forth, Navarro and Muguruza had an opportunity to close out the game when they led 9-8.
However, Golubic and Bencic didn’t just save that match point, but took two more points in a row to turn the result. This sudden turn of events ended Spain’s challenge for a medal in the women’s doubles category.

Although both competitors held their composure upon entering the media pen, they couldn’t keep it any longer. Before journalists asked Navarro their first question, both players shed uncontrollable tears. What’s next for Navarro and Muguruza?
Navarro’s story this season is inspiring. Returning after months away from the tour due to cancer, she made an immediate impact in Tokyo.
Although this defeat ends her fourth and final appearance at the Games, the Spaniard takes home happy memories of first-round victories in the two categories she participated in.

Muguruza on the other hand will compete in the singles’ quarterfinals against Elena Rybakina tomorrow. The 27-year-old might not get a better opportunity to strike gold given the top two seeds suffered shocking exits.
