It was a sad day for Japan and the Japanese fans when Naomi Osaka crashed out of the Tokyo Olympics. The World No.2 suffered defeat at the hands of World No.42 Marketa Vondrousova in straight sets. Japan’s veteran tennis ace, Kei Nishikori has expressed his grief over the youngster’s loss.

Osaka entered the tournament with the expectations of 120 million Japanese fans on her back. However, she could not follow the footsteps of Nishikori, who won a bronze medal at the Rio Olympics in 2016.

Kei Nishikori “very sad” after Osaka’s third-round loss

With Osaka’s exit, the tournament has lost its top two seeded players. Top seed Ashleigh Barty lost her first-round match on day 1 of the tournament. However, Osaka was expected to have a comeback at the Olympics, consequently winning a medal in her homeland.

I’m very sad of course that Naomi lost, and surprised. But I knew she had a lot of pressure, this is her first time at the Olympics and I know it’s not easy. I will tell her with WhatsApp,” said Nishikori in his post match interview.

On the other hand, Kei Nishikori won his second-round match against Marcos Giron of the US. He will be facing Ilya Ivashka of Belarus in the third round. “Not really, I just need to focus on what I have to do on the court,” said Nishikori when asked about his approach for the third round game.
