Archery Distance and Other Details for Tokyo Olympics 2020

Tokyo Olympics 2020 is around the corner and the excitement level is at its peak. Top athletes will finally compete against each other at the mega quadrennial games.

The archery sport of bow and arrow will begin on the 23rd of July. The sport has been a constant part of the Olympics since 1972.

Undoubtedly, South Koreans have been clean sweeping the event, followed by the USA. Ahead of the games, here is a look at the archery distance and other details.

Distance and Target for archery at Tokyo Olympics 2020

There is 70 meters distance between the target and the archer. The target is 122 cm in diameter. The target has 10 rings, and the innermost ring has the highest points, i.e. 10. Target rings are concentric and get smaller towards the center.

While there are many types of archery disciplines, only the recurve archery is part of the Summer Olympics. The game is to hit the center of the target with a bow and arrows.

At Tokyo Olympics, only the recurve bow is permitted. Whereas, the arrows are 5.55mm in diameter.

Rules of archery

At Tokyo Olympics 2020, there will 5 recurve archery events: men’s individual, women’s individual, men’s team, women’s team, and mixed team event. 128 athletes are eligible to compete, equally divided between men and women.

All the athletes have to compete in the ranking match. Based on this match the seeds are decided, and then further elimination takes place. The archer on Rank 1 will go up against the  64th rank and so on until the gold medal winner is declared.

Based on the rankings, the top seeds for team events are also decided. Further, the teams compete in quarter-finals, semi-finals, and then the finals. All the rules in archery are the same for men and women.

The latest addition in Tokyo Olympics 2020, is the mixed team event. All the rules and events are governed by the World Archery Federation at the mega-quadrennial games.

South Koreans have almost clean-swept events in the past Olympic games. The powerhouse will aim to again hit the bull’s eye and top the medal charts.

However, they might face tough competition from US archers like Brady Ellison, current world number one in men. Which country will fare well in the new mixed team event will be interesting to watch in Tokyo.
