Time PlayStation 5 Exclusive Deathloop’s Time Loop Explained: Is This Deja Vu?

Deathloop is among the many games that were originally scheduled for 2020 but had to be delayed to 2021 for the pandemic. Microsoft’s recent acquisition of ZeniMax Media, the parent company of Bethesda, raised queries about its outcome as a PS5 exclusive. However, Microsoft is open-minded in acquiring companies, allowing them to finish their ongoing projects with other competitors.

Soon enough, developer Arkane Studios and publisher Bethesda Softworks announced the release date. The developers will launch Deathloop for PS5 and PC on May 20, 2021. On other platforms, the title will not release till May 21, 2022. In a short video uploaded by Bethesda Softworks featuring Game Director Dinga Bakaba, he attempts to explain the twisted concept of time in the game to plan the perfect escape murder. Deathloop: Where is Colt and why?

Arkane Lyon’s Bakaba sheds light on the mysteries of Black Reef and why Colt must assassinate the Visionaries. The game is a murder puzzle where the player playing the character of Colt is trapped in a time loop. Or is it Deja Vu? The story begins with Colt waking up at the shores of the island. The time loop forces the natives of the island to repeat the same day in an infinite loop; only Colt and the Visionaries get to keep their memory.

To escape, Colt has to murder the eight Visionaries. They find out about Colt’s plan and manipulate everyone on the island to shoot him on sight. The Visionaries are a group of completely distinct personalities, from scientists to party animals and everything in between. Their prime goal is to become immortal, and they will do anything to preserve their youth, even exploit time and kill anyone who comes in the way. They spread the Visionaries across four districts on the island, each district with its own time period.

Why does Colt not suffer from Amnesia?

Among the Visionaries is Colt’s biggest threat, Juliana, who will outsmart and outgun him aforetime. The game has no time limit. Colt can complete the day at his own pace in any sequence he wants to until he plans the perfect murder. However, every time he dies or the loop resets, he can keep his weapons, upgrades and all information he collected during the day intact. The entire island suffers from amnesia, except him; but why? That is just one question among the many that will unravel with every loop you replay.

“What caused the time loop? Who are the Visionaries? Why does everyone on Blackreef seem to have amnesia? Who is Julianna and why is she hunting Colt? Why is everyone on the island wearing masks? How can Colt break the loop and escape the island?”
