But his opposite number, Jonathan “The General” Haggerty, is confident the Thai superstar’s reign will come to a crashing end when they meet inside the Lumpinee Boxing Stadium in Bangkok, Thailand, on Friday, April 21.

Jonathan Haggerty believed that he could put an end to Nong-O Hama’s win streak

The Englishman is preparing to leave the Thai capital with an enormous win, and he believes ONE Championship has secured the right man to bring the fight to Nong-O. Haggerty said, “One hundred percent, [I’m the guy who’s going to bring his streak to an end]. There’s only one man for the job, and I feel that it’s myself. We’ve trained hard, we’ve dedicated ourselves, and we’ve got a good game plan”.

“I know game plans don’t work all the time but we’re going to go in there and execute it as well as possible. And who knows, man?”  While it’s easy for the Londoner to talk before he makes the walk, he supports his claims by pointing out a couple of elements that will help him excel against the bantamweight Muay Thai king.

And Haggerty has undoubtedly gone from strength to strength inside the Circle since losing out to ONE Flyweight Muay Thai World Champion Rodtang “The Iron Man” Jitmuangnon twice in a row in 2019 and 2020, respectively. He is riding a three-fight winning streak into his meeting with Nong-O and has presented a far-improved arsenal over the last three years.

Haggerty spotted a lack of hunger in Nog-O Hama but was it really the case?

Speaking on his advantages over the defending World Champion, “The General” said, “I’ll say speed, youth, and footwork. And I’d say hunger also, I’m starving, I’m hungry. He’s been a champion for a long time now. You know when you’re a champion, and you just defeat everyone, I feel like the hunger sort of goes. And I’m hungry, and I can’t wait to get that belt back.”

Some of Haggerty’s points may come from a place of logic. But when talking about motivation to compete, not many would agree with him when talking about Nong-O. The multiple-time Lumpinee Stadium and Rajadamnern Stadium World Champion has finished all five of his rivals since 2019, and he seems to be getting better with each performance.

His wins have come against some of the best in the business, too, so it is genuinely difficult to see how “The General” will bring more hunger to the Circle when they square off. But if “The General’s” words ring true, fans in attendance at the Lumpinee Boxing Stadium and those watching around the world could be in for one of the biggest barnburner fights of the year in the main event of ONE Fight Night 9 next week.
