Former World No. 3 player Elina Svitolina has been a consistent performer over the years on the women’s Tour. Over the course of her career, the Ukranian star has won 16 singles titles. This year, there was an interesting development in her life, off the court; in July 2021, Svitolina married the French tennis player Gael Monfils. 

The couple had been dating since 2018, before they got engaged in April this year. In a recent interview, she talked about the rough patch that she and Monfils had hit in early 2021.

Of course, that is a common occurrence amongst couples and they did overcome their issues. She recently revealed that being in a relationship with an athlete from the same field helped them be closer, as they could spend more time together.  

Svitolina was asked whether their marriage changed, in any way, the manner in which she prepared for tournaments. She stated, “Tennis preparation has not changed anything at all. Everything was connected with us. I trained there, then he came there, I came there because the two of us are in tennis, that is, it is much easier for us what we need.”

Elina mentioned that after the marriage, things are much better. Being married helps the busy couple spend more time with each other.  

The 27-year-old added, “There is a tennis gym when only this is the most important for preparation for training. So it did not change it. After the wedding, it somehow held us together more. There were some problems at the beginning of the year but yes after the wedding, there was more of us…”

Coming to tennis, Svitolina won the bronze medal at the Tokyo Olympics. She is scheduled to compete in the Australian Open 2022 beginning next month. We wish her all the best for the upcoming season.
