Legendary Waugh genes and Cricket have an explosive combination, with the latest discovery being Austin, Steve Waugh’s son who plays for the Under 15 Cricket team for New South Wales.
Austin was a part of the New South Wales’ playing XI Vs Northern Territory game as a part of the National Championships conducted by School Sports Australia at Darwin, Northern Australia.
Northern Territory was tottering at 5-81 when Austin got the ball in his hand and the eventual score was a meagre 92. Waugh ran through the lower middle order and the tail with ease using his incisive in swinging seam ups.

Waugh’s figures read 4.4-0-8-4 beating his father’s career best 4-33 Vs Sri Lanka in Colombo.
His contributions in the field also involved two catches, both at cover.
New South Wales team too didn’t get off to a great start either, reeling at 4-53 when Waugh walked out to join his teammate Thomas Sowden and scored a calm 17 not out off 37 deliveries and most importantly, batted for over 68 minutes soaking the pressure off a run chase.
Austin Waugh later expressed his excitement over his bowling contribution and said, “I’m happy that I got a few wickets, it came off and the pitch movement helped a bit”.

Steve along with his wife made the trip north to oversee their son’s tour. “Dad just said I did well today and before the tournament, he said to just trust myself and back myself ” Austin added.
The performance puts Austin well in contention for Australia’s Under- 16 squad and he is looking to impress his Uncle Mark Waugh who happens to be one of the selectors.
“I’m not looking past these championships at the moment, just looking to win these…I’ll play my best and whatever has to happen, will happen” said a modest Austin about his chances.
