The resuming tennis calendar has split players into two groups. One group will play in the US, risking their participation in the clay tournaments in Europe and the other group will skip the US Open to play in Europe.

The main reason for this split is the different quarantine rules in different countries. If a 14-day quarantine happens when coming from the US then that eliminates any chance of playing in the French Open. Also, there is so much traveling in the new calendar that some players won’t risk the fatigue and the coronavirus.

The quarantine is asking players to choose between the US Open and the French Open – Jamie Murray

British doubles ace Jamie Murray has also raised a similar concern. In conversation with Sky Sports, the Brit said that with the quarantine players will have to choose if they want to play one Masters tournament and one Grand Slam in the US or two Masters and one Grand Slam in Europe.

“If that’s enforced for everyone then that’s a 14-day quarantine so you obviously can’t play in the tournaments after. That’s probably the biggest stumbling block because if that happens then you’re asking the players to choose between going to the States – to play a Masters Series and Grand Slam – or staying in Europe and playing two Masters Series and a Grand Slam.” Jamie said.

But Jamie also understands that the USTA has to go ahead with the US Open. So he is still assessing the situation and will decide about his participation at a much later stage.

“I know the US Open is desperate to go ahead and they’re trying to find the best solution for that to happen. I’m kind of like everybody else and observing from afar and waiting to find out what the end result will be. If it goes ahead what’s that going to look like in terms of the event set-up itself but also there are the quarantine issues as well when coming back into the EU afterward,” Jamie said.

Lots of questions and stipulations in place for the season’s return. But wherever the players play all hope will be to have a safe resumption.
