The Last of Us Part 2 game director Neil Druckmann recently took to twitter to explain a certain ‘plot hole’ fans spotted in the game. The sequel has a scene where Joel performs his version of ‘Future Days’ by Pearl Jam. Twitterati spotted this and quickly pointed the mistake as the song wasn’t released until October 2013, which was a month after ‘Outbreak Day’ in the game. Neil cleared all doubts with the following tweet:
But how did Joel know @pearljam's Future Days if the song didn't drop until October 2013 — a month after Outbreak Day? Glad you asked! You see… it was performed live and posted on youtube months prior to the album's release. https://t.co/WEQmwPrE7L pic.twitter.com/g6Wa3GcMUh

The link in the tweet is a video of Pearl Jam performing live at Wrigley Field posted on July 26, 2013 i.e. two months before ‘Outbreak day.’ This put to rest any doubts about how Joel knew the song before it released.
As for the rights to the song, the story behind how Naughty Dog convinced Pearl Jam to use the song in their game is even more interesting. Apparently, Neil pitched the idea of using ‘Future Days’ multiple times in the game to Pearl Jam’s manager. He also reportedly showed him the trailer for TLOFU 2 even before Sony saw it.
His interaction with GQ also revealed interesting details behind the development of the game. You can read the full piece here.

Fans’ Verdict on The Last Of Us Part 2
The tale that gave us characters like Joel and Ellie left the fans quite disappointed. A lot of them felt that a simple revenge plot did not do justice to the game and that it should’ve been more. One of the biggest reasons for discontent was when they killed off Joel in the first few hours of the game. This set Ellie on a path of revenge that did not end satisfactorily for everyone.

In addition to this, before the game released, Naughty Dog showed interactions between Joel and Ellie in the trailer. This led the fans to think it would be another Joel-Ellie adventure, but boy were they wrong. They even called out the studio for actually misleading them.
People may argue all they want but Naughty Dog has managed to create yet another masterpiece with their inept story-telling and stunning gameplay design. We can’t wait to see what the next chapter in Ellie’s life has in store for us.
