Former World No.7 Richard Gasquet has criticized the new tournament schedule involving the French Open and US Open. The new return tournament schedule notably features 2 ATP Masters 1000 tournaments and 2 Grand slams being played in just 6 weeks.
Gasquet in an interview with le Parisien gave his opinions regarding the schedule, his participation, etc. Gasquet was unhappy. The tournaments are all crammed up and it seems tough for most of the players who want and can win all the tournaments to attend them.
“This calendar is completely crazy. So many tournaments in a short time, it’s grotesque. But everyone wants to save their tournament. This is normal because it is economically vital. But the players will have to make choices, even more so for the best who play many more games.” said Gasquet.

” Those who want to win Grand Slams can’t afford this schedule” – Richard Gasquet
With the 2 grand slams placed just 2 weeks apart, Gasquet is skeptical whether players can physically do it. Also, the ATP Masters tournaments fill up the 2 weeks between the grand slams ruling out any resting or recovery time between the tournaments.
“In any case, it seems impossible to string together the US Open with the Madrid tournament the following week. Same scenario with Rome which is held the week before Roland Garros. Those who want to win a Grand Slam can’t afford it.” said Gasquet
Gasquet also echoed the concerns of the majority of the players. He questioned the rules regarding quarantine and was worried if any of the players turn out to be positive during the tournament. Like some of the other players, he will see how the situation progresses and then decide whether to go to New York or skip the clay tournaments after the US Open.

“The Ultimate Tennis Showdown is perfect for regaining sensations, no training can replace a match,” said Gasquet.
Gasquet is ranked 50th currently. He hasn’t had the best of the years in recent times. He has struggled with injuries. So the 34-year-old will be looking to get back on the court and prove himself again.
