Andy Murray and his hip injury derailed his tennis career just as he was peaking. In order to rectify the issue and to return to the sport, Murray underwent a surgery. But now, it seems the problems are persisting.

Murray was on top of the sport in the year 2016. After losing to Novak Djokovic in the finals of both the Australian Open and Roland Garros, he went on a rampage through the rest of the season.

Before Wimbledon, he won the Queen’s Club Championships for a record fifth time. He won his second Wimbledon, and third Grand Slam over all a few weeks later.

At the Rio Olympics, Murray reached the final and beat Juan Martin del Potro to become the first man to win two Olympic gold medals in men’s singles tennis. he went on to win the Shanghai masters as well as the Paris Masters.

He continued his domination by winning the ATP World tour Finals too, also becoming the World No. 1 in the process.

Hip issues continue to hold Andy Murray back

looking at his 2016 season, we can all agree he was playing the best tennis of his life that year. Unfortunately for the Scotsman, his injury concerns began the following year.

In the early part of 2017, it was actually an elbow injury that forced him to take a break. But by the time Wimbledon arrived, his hip injury had sprouted it’s neck.

The next two years, Andy went through a period of trying to rectify his hip problems with surgery and therapy. By 2018, he even dropped out of the Top 800 ATP rankings.

In 2019, Murray opted to go for a hip resurfacing surgery, which was successful.

The surgery seemed to have done the trick as Murray cautiously started competing again. The former World No. 1 even defeated Stan Wawrinka in the final of the European Open in Antwerp. The popular consensus was that Andy was trudging back to full fitness again, and it would be only a matter of time before he was back at his best.

Alas, his struggles have continued into 2020 as well. Apparently, there is bone growth on his hip, perhaps related to his hip resurfacing surgery from before. In order for him to continue competing in tennis, he may have to undergo another surgery.

“If I have to have the bone removed because it is what is causing the problem, then that is a pain in the arse. But we’ll see what happens in the next few weeks.”

But Murray is a fierce competitor and, naturally, he wants to play at the biggest events again.

“I want to play in the slams again. That is the thing that I have missed over these last few years.”

Let’s hope another surgery is not required, but if it’s the only solution, he should go for it. Tennis with Andy Murray involved makes it that bit better.
