Manchester City were back at their best once again this evening, with the side picking up a 4-0 win over Fulham. Pep Guardiola‘s side was all over their opponents, maintaining a possession-heavy game. Left-back Josko Gvardiol was unexpectedly the star of the show for the team, bagging a stunning brace. The dying minutes of the game saw Manchester City win a penalty following Issa Diop’s rash tackle on Julian Alvarez. While fans expected Gvardiol to take the spot kick to complete his hattrick, the team went with Alvarez, who easily slotted the ball past Neto to make it 4-0.
Josko Gvardiol was seen having a word with skipper Kyle Walker and senior defender Ruben Dias after City was awarded the penalty. The defender seemed keen on taking the spot kick. However, Bernardo Silva stepped in, likely to add that the team would go with the designated spot-kick taker.
Gvardiol even talked about the penalty after the game, stating, “Another two goals. I’m happy and a clean sheet. We were discussing me taking the penalty, I said I’d like to [take it] and we know who is the taker and he takes. I’m happy for Julian Alvarez to score.”

While Josko Gvardiol might be okay with the decision, fans were not pleased with the Manchester City captains for denying Gvardiol the chance to get his first-ever career hat-trick. Considering no defender in the Premier League has scored three goals in a game, this could have been a big moment for the player. Many took to X to call the team out for not letting the Croatian take the spot kick.

Manchester City supporters were not happy with their team’s decision to deny Gvardiol the chance to make history. One user claimed that Gvardiol should have been allowed to take the spot kick over Julian Alvarez. He added, “Alvarez not letting Gvardiol get his hat trick is a terrible decision. I’m not a City supporter, but even I know how much he has done for that squad and to not let him complete an easy Hat trick was absolutely wrong.”

One claimed that Josko Gvardiol should have demanded to take the spot kick since Julian Alvarez did not need it, “Gvardiol should’ve taken it, its something he’ll remember and treasure for the rest of his life that as a CB he scored a hat trick. Alvarez didn’t need that penalty. What a shame.”

It makes sense to go with the designated spot-kick taker, considering Manchester City needs to close in on the goal difference against Arsenal. While the hat trick for Gvardiol would have been a great feeling, the team has bigger things to fight for at the moment.
