The final of the women’s singles at the National Bank Open saw fourth seeded Karolina Pliskova take on the unseeded Camilla Giorgi. While Pliskova once again toppled Aryna Sabalenka in the semifinals to reach a final, Giorgi defeated Jessica Pegula to secure her first appearance in a WTA 1000 final.

In a tight contest between two 29-year-olds, Giorgi shocked Pliskova once again in straight sets. The final score read 6-3, 7-5.

Pliskova served first, and held it to go 1-0 up. Although Giorgi responded by holding her own serve, the third game saw a tight contest. After reaching deuce, the unseeded Italian won two break points which the World No. 6 saved. After the third deuce of the game however, Pliskova won two consecutive points to go 2-1 up.

After Giorgi tied the score 2-2, Pliskova produced a love service game to go 3-2 up. In the sixth game, the Czech earned a break point at 40-30. However, the World No. 71 not only saved it, but clinched the game to tie the score 3-3.

The seventh game saw the longest game of the entire set. In an enthralling battle, both players went back-and-forth trading advantages. However, the unseeded Italian hung on to break Pliskova’s serve with her fourth break point. During the set, Pliskova also found the time to throw her racquet at the court.

Giorgi kept the momentum going by holding her serve to go 5-3 up. In the next game, she broke the World No. 6’s serve once again to clinch the set 6-3.

In the second set, Giorgi raced to a 40-0 lead in the first game. Although Pliskova pulled it back to deuce, the Italian held her serve to go 1-0 up. She threatened another break almost instantly in the second game, before Pliskova saved it and tied the score at 1-1.

Giorgi broke Pliskova’s serve in the fourth game of the set to go 3-1 up. However, the fourth seed broke right back, and held her subsequent serve to tie the set at 3-3. The next six games saw no break points at all as Giorgi took a 6-5 lead. However, she saved her best for last as she broke the World No. 6’s serve one last time to clinch the set 7-5.

With this, she won her first title at the WTA 1000 level, ensuring she will be no pushover in the US Open.
