Romanian tennis star Simona Halep has had a season of highs and lows this year. Although she reached the quarterfinals of the Australian Open, she missed the French Open and Wimbledon due to injury.

Although she didn’t fare that well in tournaments prior to the US Open, the 29-year-old put in good performances in New York. Despite losing to fifth seed Elina Svitolina in the fourth round, Halep scored impressive victories over Elena Rybakina and Camila Giorgi prior to that.

After her run in Flushing Meadows ended, Halep returned to Romania, where she revealed the next step in her personal life.

Simona Halep to marry boyfriend Toni Iuruc next week

Although Halep initially didn’t make her relationships public, she made that exception with Iuruc. She first shared a photo of the duo in 2019 while sending Christmas wishes to all her fans.

After returning to Romania, journalists flocked the two-time Grand Slam champion outside the airport. During that time, she revealed she will marry Iuruc next week. In addition, she also credited former Romanian World No. 1 Ilie Nastase for mentioning this piece of news in the end of August.

She said“Yes, Mr. Nastase gave me away. Yes, we will get married next week, it’s a beautiful event, I have emotions. There are different emotions (no – compared to tennis). It’s the personal part, tennis remains tennis, but here it’s much more important step and I’m glad it’s happening.” (Quotes translated from Romanian by Google)

During an appearance on Teo Show, a Romanian television program, Nastase revealed he received a call from Halep in which she broke the news to the 75-year-old. “I received a phone call from Simona Halep, she was in New York. Simona said that she will have her wedding on the 15th (September), at a local from Constanța,” said Nastase.
