This edition of the Wimbledon Championships has been filled with see-saw clashes. The upsets continued to flow in the women’s draw, with the 9th seed Belinda Bencic the latest one to crash out.
The Swiss player had a fairly encouraging grass court campaign in the build-up to Wimbledon, making the final in Berlin and the Round of 16 in Eastbourne. However, Bencic once again crumbled under pressure on the big stage. She was humbled 6-3 6-3 by Kaja Juvan of Slovenia, thus cutting short her stay in England.

Down on Court-3, Bencic looked a shadow of herself right from the first point. Within a blink of an eye, the former Dubai champion was down 0-5 to Juvan. The rhythm was totally off on both flanks, as Bencic struggled to hold her own service games. She managed to wiggle her way back to 3-5 before eventually conceding the first set 6-3 in 41 minutes.
In the second set, Belinda looked to gain some sort of momentum. Her innate abilities aided her and kept her toe-to-toe with the Slovenian. However, with the service not clicking whatsoever, it was bound to be the end of the road sooner or later. Bencic made 27 unforced errors on the day, a number that was just too high.

Juvan calling all the shots
The performance from Bencic was surely disheartening, but credit is to be given where credit is due. Kaja Juvan showcased what she is capable of in her Round-1 match vs Iga Swiatek at Roland Garros. She constantly put Bencic under the pump with her guile and wit. Winning 75% on her first serve and striking 22 winners, Juvan was a deserving victor.
Juvan’s forehand was a lethal weapon throughout and will prove to be a menace in the near future. If the 1 hour 19-minute long domination was anything to go by, Kaja Juvan could well be a dark horse at the Championships this year.

The loss resulted in yet another disappointing ending to a Grand Slam for the Swiss ace Bencic. Apart from her career-best semi-final campaign at the US Open 2019, she seems to choke when it matters the most. As it goes, Wimbledon 2021 continues to impress and keep fans on their toes.
