A big upset on the Rod Laver Arena was produced, as the 15-year-old of Coco Gauff, knocked out the defending champion Naomi Osaka 6-3, 6-4 in the third round of the Australian Open 2020. The debutant at the Aussie Open, Coco progressed into the pre-quarterfinals of the Melbourne major in just 67 minutes of time.

A pressurized opening service game from Coco Gauff, as she produced a hold after tackling a deuce. Coco seemed to be well prepared for the Naomi challenge as she returned cleverly on her serves.

Also, their last meeting in New York has prepared Gauff to absorb Osaka’s power. Both of them were dominating their first serves and the ladies made no silly errors. Coco produced a love-hold at 3-2.    

The body serves from Coco Gauff didn’t give a chance to Naomi Osaka to break her serve. Later, an error from the defending champion gave rise to the first break point of the match.

Returning Osaka’s serve with sheer concentration, the young lady broke her serve as the Japanese placed the ball on the net. Coco led by 5-3 and within a blink of an eye, the teenage phenom from Florida served out the set to love as Osaka sprayed unforced errors.

With Naomi’s first serve percentage dropping in the second set, Coco broke her serve again. The third seed Osaka received break points in the match for the first time as Gauff double-faulted.

Coco saved one of them with a big serve, but on the next one, Naomi confused the young lady on the net and snatched away the break of serve. Later she made a come back with a hold at 2-1.

The American continued to play a clean game of tennis on her serves. With World Number four Osaka’s mistakes rising again, Gauff broke her serve to 15, led by 4-3 and took the driver’s seat in the third-round match.

Naomi Osaka produced a total of 30 unforced errors in the match and her erratic tennis towards the end gave her no chances to make a comeback. With three match points in hand, Coco Gauff sealed her fourth-round spot and took out the defending champion. After this loss, Osaka will be ranked number nine in the world.

“I love it down here. Thank you guys from the bottom of my heart. Oh my gosh, I’m on Rod Laver Arena,” Coco Gauff said after her victory on the big court.
