While most of the tennis players are busy swinging their racquets at the US Open 2020, the fastest players on the WTA tour, Carla Suarez Navarro, has been diagnosed with Hodgkins Lymphoma. It is a type of cancer that originates from white blood cells. Her compatriot and close friend Garbine Muguruza dedicated her first-round US Open win to Carla.
Two-time Grand Slam champion Muguruza knew about Carla’s cancer diagnosis earlier, and she was shocked to learn about the same at the beginning.
“When we spoke a few days ago when she gave me the news, I was, I think, shocked because I was expecting to see her in this tournament,” she said.

Garbine Muguruza and Carla Suarez Navarro’s relationship
She further opened up about her relationship with her compatriot and their stint on the court. On Tuesday, Muguruza held a straight-set victory against Japan’s Nao Hibino in New York and dedicated her win to her friend Navarro.
“You know, she’s such a nice woman, so sweet, so kind, so humble. When these things happen to these good people, I feel, like, so sad about it. So I know she was watching my match, and we talked a little bit,” she added.
“I, for sure, will dedicate this win to her, because I want her to feel that we are behind her, that I am behind her, and I will go and see her at some point when it is fine,” she added.

“For me, it’s very special. We shared a decade of emotions and everything. It’s a shock for me, somebody so close that is going through this,” Muguruza shared.
Previously Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal sent their wishes to Navarro and wished her best to recover soon.
