The Wimbledon Championships is making headlines for new sensations daily, but this time, controversies are overpowering. The recent protests regarding climate change at Court 18 interrupted the play, making everyone furious. Protestors invaded the court mid-match, throwing jigsaws and eco-friendly orange confetti glitter in the air. Police and staff had to intervene to control the situation and resume the play. Not only Tennis but also cricket, Snooker, and Rugby were victims of this protest. ‘Just Stop Oil’ protestors invaded Court 18 twice, interrupting two games, one ATP and one WTA.
The Grand Slam authorities were ordered to hire more stewards and even urged to take certain actions to curb the protests without hurting people. From the Prime Minister to the players, everyone condemned the act, and the rules for this ancient Slam have become even stricter.

The protestors left the organizer’s no option but to take strict action against them. Home Office minister Chris Philp urged fans to intervene and pull protestors off the court without causing them any harm. This statement was inspired by England cricketer Jonny Bairstow’s act of dragging a protestor out of the field.
According to the ‘Dailymail,’ Philip said, “It is reasonable for people to try and protect the event that they are watching. Obviously, nobody should do anything dangerous or hurt anyone.” In a humble gesture, Katie Boulter and Daria Saville helped clean the mess created on the court. Boulter even empathized with the cause of protest but condemned the protests as it is not the right way to go about Climate change.
Talking to Times Radio, Philip said, “We’d like to see obviously those sporting organizations like Wimbledon increase the number of marshalls and stewards. They have to be more careful about checking people coming into sporting events and react really quickly when something happens.” But who is behind these protests, and why are they targeting sports?
Why was Wimbledon made the target of Just Stop Oil’s unlawful protests?
The organization receives most of the funding from the chairman of Forest Green Rovers, Dale Vince. Speaking to the ‘Guardian,’ Vince said, “You?re going to upset people when you disrupt things, that?s for sure. But, look, the cricket was disrupted for three or four minutes. The UN says four million people have lost their lives in the climate crisis so far. Other data shows that 20m people globally are made homeless every year. Compared to that, a few minutes delay at a sporting event really is nothing.?

Vince agreed that their way of doing things is not right, but asserted that they need a sensational approach to get the government to work. He also added that events don’t matter to them, and their target is high-profile sports. He also warned that the organization doesn’t stop with this sport and cautioned other high-profile sports to look out for them as their agenda is to grab headlines.

In an illiberal move, Philip revealed that they encouraged the sporting leaders to use injunctions as their breach results in severe penalties on the grounds of criminal charges. He also wished that ministers encourage the officials to ally with courts for obtaining orders to ban any sporting action that might result in the disruption of the game. What is your take on it? Do you think there will be further interruptions?
