The Serbian legend Novak Djokovic pulled off his eight-time Australian Open title after his epic five-set championship match victory over the Austrian Dominic Thiem. The unprecedented king of Melbourne Park, Djokovic will be ranked number one in the world.
His slam total extends to number 17 at Australian Open 2020 and he stays on the third spot on the list of all-time Grand Slam leaders, behind Roger Federer (20) and Rafael Nadal (19). Once again a new face of tennis, after Daniil Medvedev at US Open 2019, fell short of a few points from making his Grand Slam breakthrough.
After taking the first set Novak Djokovic was given two time-violations and that had a huge impact on his play. He dropped six games in a row and consequently trailed by two sets to one in the championship match. With great mental toughness and determination, Novak Djokovic inched closer towards his 17th Grand Slam title after playing four hours of incessant tennis. The early break in the final set aided the Serb to clinch a 4-6, 6-4, 6-2, 3-6, 6-4 on the Rod Laver Arena.

“Stay close to the people that love you” – Novak Djokovic
In his victory speech, Djokovic paid tribute to the recent demise of the basketball legend Kobe Bryant and his daughter, and also to the devastating bushfire havoc in Australia. “I would just like to say that this is a reminder to all of us that we should stick together more than ever, be with our families, stay close to the people that love you, that care about you,” Novak mentioned after his epic win over Thiem.

Classy of both to mention the bushfires and for Novak to mention Kobe and his daughter. Reminding everyone what’s truly important in life. Their impact goes beyond the sport.
