In the 2nd round of the 2021 Australian Open, Stan Wawrinka faced off against Marton Fucsovics. It was a tough match for Stan and unfortunately, he lost it 7-5, 6-1, 4-6, 2-6, 7-6. Here’s how it happened.

Marton Fucsovics vs Stan Wawrinka: The First and Second Sets

The first set of the match was a hard-fought one. Fucsovics got an early break, but Stan was able to break back and level it. Going further into the set, both players were trying to get the upper hand and at 5-5, it was Marton who did so. He broke the Swiss star and went on to serve out the set 7-5.

Moving onto the second set, Stan did not start it well at all. He was broken twice by Fucsovics, who raced to a 4-0 lead.  Unfortunately for Wawrinka, Marton broke him again to seal the second set 6-1.

This was a disappointing start for the Swiss star who made many unforced errors. This led to him being 2 sets down and a comeback was looking highly unlikely.

The 3rd and 4th Sets

Even though a win was looking very unlikely, Wawrinka was still fighting. In the very first game, the Swiss star broke Fucsovics and held his serve to take a 2-0 lead.

This was a much better set from Stan as he was hitting more winners and making fewer unforced errors. He served out the set 6-4 and things were looking a lot better for him in the match.

Moving into the 4th set, Stan started it exactly like the 3rd. He broke Marton in the first game and held his serve to take a 2-0 lead.

The Swiss star had raised his level by quite a bit and that led to him gaining another break to win the set 6-2. It was a great comeback by him, but the match wasn’t done as he still had to win the 5th set.

The final set

The match had gone to the deciding set, and both players were doing their best to win it. They were serving incredibly well and hence, neither one was able to break the other until the 8th game of the match.

Leading 4-3, Fucsovics broke Stan to serve for the match. However, Wawrinka broke back immediately and held his serve to level the set at 5-5. A tiebreaker followed which was eventually won 11-9 by Fucsovics even though Stan had 3 match point opportunities.

This was a disappointing loss for Stan, who has now failed to reach the latter stages of any Slam in over 3 years. Hopefully, he will do better at future events.
